Nantucket Island

In 1602, Nantucket Island was discovered by Captain Bartholomew Gosnold. In 1641, Nantucket was deeded to Thomas Mayhew of Watertown, Massachusetts. In 1659, Mayhew sold the island to a group of investors, reserving an interest for himself, “for the sum of thirty pounds … and also two beaver hats.” In 1966, it was designated a National Historic Landmark District as being the “finest surviving architectural and environmental example of a late 18th- and early 19th-century New England seaport town.”
