Being an island, sometimes people think that getting to MV is tough, and like travelling to a different planet. In reality, it is pretty easy! Martha’s Vineyard is not connected to the mainland by tunnels or bridges, so the only way to get there is by boat or plane. The island is only 7 miles off the coast of Massachusetts so it is a quick and easy trip once you travel to the coast.

  1. By Ferry

Getting to an island is synonymous with taking a ferry, and there are a TON of options to choose from when you want to get over to Martha’s Vineyard. Many of the ferry services are seasonal (May – October), year round service is available from Woods Hole, MA and New Bedford, MA. These are traditional ferries that take between 45-50 minutes to reach the Vineyard. Steamship Authority is the only ferry service that can transport cars to the island. Service also exists from NY and Northern NJ, although that trip will take a full 5 hours. There are a few smaller ferry services leaving from Falmouth. If you are already on Cape Cod, Hy-Line is the only convenient ferry service from mid-cape in Hyannis. We offer a 1-hour high speed trip over, with comfortable seating, refreshments available, friendly staff, and allow pets and bikes too!

  1. By Personal Boat

If you are lucky enough to have your own boat, or know someone who does, it’s very doable to sail across the sound to Martha’s Vineyard. Make a mooring reservation at any one of the many marinas on the island, and sail from the Cape or Southeastern MA across the sound over to Martha’s Vineyard. What a joy to have your own anchor in such a fabulous location, make your own schedule, and have an adventure along the way. Planning for good weather to cross is important, but it is not a difficult journey.

  1. By Plane

Martha’s Vineyard is accessible by air, with flights available from Boston, New York, and other major cities. With quick flights, plenty of options of departure points, convenience of booking private transportation if funds allow, and multiple flights a day it is certainly a tempting option to fly. The island’s airport is small but well-equipped, making flying a quick and convenient option. However, flights can be costly, particularly during peak season, and you may still need transportation upon arrival to reach your final destination on the island as the airport is centrally located on the island and not very close to the vacation hubs on island.
