Spring vs. Summer Fishing: What’s Biting in Nantucket Sound?
Nantucket Sound is a dynamic waterway where the catch changes right along with the water temperature. As the seasons shift, so does the life beneath the surface. At Hy-Line Cruises, we serve as your local experts with daily departures from Hyannis throughout both the spring and summer. Whether you are chasing the excitement of early migratory runs or looking for the steady action of summer bottom fishing, there is always something waiting at the end of your line.
Spring: The Season of Arrivals
Spring on the Cape, typically starting in May, marks a time of major transition. This is when migratory species begin their journey north into our warming waters.
Striped Bass
These are the stars of the spring show. The “schoolies” usually arrive first, followed by the larger fish once water temperatures hit the mid 50s.
Tautog
These fish are often found around the rocky areas of the Sound. They move inshore during the spring, making them a popular early-season target.
The “Hungry” Factor
One of the best parts about spring fishing is that these fish are often eager to strike. After a long migration, they are looking for a meal, and that provides incredible action for our early-season trips.

Summer: Peak Action & Variety
As the air warms up, the fishing truly heats up. Summer is the prime time for a “bottom fishing bonanza” on Nantucket Sound. The variety of species increases, and the frequency of bites makes for a very busy deck.
Black Sea Bass
A favorite for summer anglers. These fish are known for being a blast to catch and even better to eat.
Scup (Porgy)
These are abundant and consistent. Their high volume makes them the perfect target for family-friendly summer excursions.
Bluefish
Known as aggressive fighters, bluefish typically flood the Sound during the warmest months and put up a great highlight-reel struggle.
Fluke (Summer Flounder)
These become much more prevalent in the sounds as the summer peaks.
Planning Your Trip: Rates & Options
Fishing on the Cape is a time-honored tradition. Summer trips are especially ideal for introducing kids or grandkids to the fundamentals of fishing. Because scup and sea bass are so active, the “waiting time” is short, which keeps the younger anglers engaged and excited.
Since these trips are a staple of the season, our schedules can fill up quickly. We recommend making advanced reservations to ensure your spot on the boat.
Here are our current trip options and rates:
- Prime Time Porgy (5-Hour): This is our most extensive trip for the dedicated angler. Tickets are $110 for both adults and children, and rod rentals are available for $5 plus tax.
- Prime Time Porgy (4-Hour): A great mid-length option for a morning or afternoon on the water. Tickets are $89 for both adults and children. Rod rentals are $5 plus tax.
