History
Our Founders
Richard and Robert Scudder (brothers and graduates from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy), saw an opportunity when John F. Kennedy’s election in 1960 spiked the demand for views of the Kennedy Compound. Our marine sightseeing business started from a small parcel of land on the north end of Ocean Street Docks, purchased with profits from the Scudders’ family oil business. With the 150-passenger Maine coastal steamer Prudence, we began our journey as Hyannis Harbor Tours.
Business Development
Over time, our founders expanded the family business to deep-sea fishing, developed a bigger fleet, and added seasonal ferries to Martha’s Vineyard to meet an increasing need for passage between the island and the mainland. In 1972, we bought the Nantucket Boat Company’s fleet and their south-end facilities, as well as the trade name Hy-Line. Over the last 50 years, we continued to grow—offering the only year-round high-speed ferry to Nantucket, the only sightseeing tour of the Cape Cod Canal, and a variety of themed cruises for all to enjoy.
