Nantucket Daydream: A Day on Nantucket

See photos below
Until you’ve experienced it yourself, you’ll never truly understand… the Little Grey Lady of the Sea.
As you travel to Nantucket island by ferry, the excitement and anticipation of your days kicks in like high-speed water jets. When cruising into Nantucket Harbor you will pass Brant Point Lighthouse, completed in 1759. Many visitors love to take photos of this lighthouse from our boat, or walk out to the lighthouse themselves.
And as soon as you walk off your ferry onto Straight Wharf, you will very likely fall in love. If you only have one day, we encourage you to stay downtown and immerse yourself in island time. Courtesy of our friends at the Town of Nantucket’s Department of Culture & Tourism, here is a handy-dandy walking tour brochure.
Straight Wharf turns into Main Street and is the bustling main drag of Nantucket’s downtown area. This 10-block section of historic buildings and cobblestones is a gateway to the island. Main Street has a variety of dining options from coffee shops and grab and go spots, to sit down restaurants, ice cream and more. You’ll be hard pressed not to find something you’re in the mood for!
Within a short walk from Main Street there is plenty of history and art to see, too. The Whaling Museum is exquisite with exhibits showcasing Nantucket’s vast whaling history, with a cannot miss real whale skeleton adorning the ceiling. The Nantucket Atheneum, Maria Mitchell Association, and many historical landmarks are also within walking distance and worth a stop.
Along the brick sidewalks, you can definitely find a treasure or two to take home. From designer boutiques and gift shops to art galleries and jewelry stores, there is something for every budget and taste. There is even a bookstore, specialty dog store, and the best fudge (thanks Aunt Leah!) on the planet.
If you explore Nantucket by foot, the downtown area – specifically Main Street – is the place to be. You can lose yourself in the wonderful shopping, sightseeing, and dining opportunities!
If you’re a little more adventurous we have two get-you-out-of-town suggestions: get onboard with Nantucket Island Tours (with three different island tours to choose from) or grab the shuttle from Nantucket Visitor Services on Federal Street out to Cisco Brewers (the most magical place on earth).
With its unspoiled charm and natural beauty it is easy to see why so many travelers flock to Nantucket Island year after year. We look forward to seeing you soon!
